A dish made from broccoli and chocolate doesn’t sound very appealing at first glance. In fact, nobody really knows if it’s good or not. Perhaps we are missing out on an interesting \u00ab\u00a0sweet and sour<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0? We rely on our preconceived ideas, but deep down, nobody has ever tried it… Isn’t it a bit like any radical innovation that involves leaving our \u201ccomfort zone\u201d and daring to explore counter-intuitive associations?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this week’s workshop at the Politecnico in Milan, we asked the students to take risks by inventing \u00ab\u00a0Multiple Places<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0, to go beyond the usual typologies of the services that make up the city, to do force themselves a little bit and concoct atypical and perhaps promising combinations…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

1. A COLLABORATIVE CITY OF ‘MULTIPLE PLACES\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

But first of all, what do we mean by \u00ab\u00a0multiple places<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0? For a year, in charge of the curation of the Maison POC Collaborative City[1]<\/sup><\/a>as part of Lille Metropole 2020, World Capital of Design, we met with more than 80 actors from the metropolitan area whose projects struck us because they were based on places that mixed different functions: a canteen & landlord at the bottom of a building in a social residence[2]<\/sup><\/a>, an art school laboratory in the business management department of a university[3]<\/sup><\/a>, a workspace for users in the entrance hall of a public administration[4]<\/sup><\/a>, a teleworking space in a suburban railway station[5]<\/sup><\/a>, a repair-caf\u00e9 in a business incubator[6]<\/sup><\/a>, a fablab in a day-care center for disabled children[7]<\/sup><\/a>, a workspace open to local communities in the entrance hall of a sanitation and waste treatment company[8]<\/sup><\/a>, etc. and a whole series of emerging places integrating multiple functions and remixing the classic categories of the urban fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emergence of this wide range of places engages all the functions of daily life in the city: work, food, entertainment, education, health, social, etc. and seems to interact with the most diverse categories of population. More than third places or additional places on top of home and work, these social spaces seem to be characterized by the fact that they combine two distinct entities, juxtaposed but not hybridised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have called them ‘multiple places’<\/em> and at the DxCC Design for Collaborative Cities Lille<\/em> conference[9]<\/a><\/sup> we sought to analyse how these often very atypical associations between typical urban places seemed to provoke changes in practice among the users of these places: mixing of the populations of the neighbourhood and the social residence in the canteen and landlord basement, inclusion of children with disabilities and other children in the same fablab, increase in remote work among the passengers of the suburb train station, strengthening of the links between the business incubator and the population of the neighbourhood, transversality between the administrative services sharing the same entrance hall, collaboration between the sanitation company and the public authorities clients, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As a continuation of these explorations, this week-long workshop with about fifty students from the PSSD Product Service System Design section of the Politecnico di Milano sought to explore an urban scenario in which multiple places would become the new normality in cities, with a twofold objective: to reinvent a city through the design of multiple places responding to the new constraints but also to the opportunities shaped by the pandemic and to explore whether the daily life of a variety of population profiles passing through different multiple places would become more sustainable, inclusive and resilient. This experimentation seems interesting from at least two aspects that we propose to look at in more detail in this article: on the one hand, a collection of the presumed effects of multiple places on urban lifestyles and, on the other hand, a methodological approach of radical in-vitro experimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MOCK MAYOR’S BRIEFING<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My dear citizens,<\/em><\/p>

Our city took part in an European network focused on temporary use of vacant spaces. This URBACT network called REFILL The City allow us to learn during 3 years from peer cities in Europe and I was particularly impressed by one of the lessons learned: \u201cwe get on board of this program with in mind the idea of learning to reduce urban vacancy and possibly get rid of this problem. We end-up the collaboration acknowledging between all city partners that vacant buildings represent an incredible opportunity for city making, for inventing new urban solutions, collaboratively, for testing it with the population and the local stakeholders through temporary use. In Ghent in Belgium, in Nantes in France, in Bremen in Germany, through temporary use, they experiment urban planning before redevelopping the city?<\/em><\/p>

I would like today to invite you to experiment the potential of Multiple Places to foster new and more sustainable, responsible and inclusive ways of living in our city, For that we identify 8 vacant spaces in what we would like to call from now on, our Experimental Neighbourhood. I urge you to imagine Multiple Places connected to some of the key functions of urban everyday life and implement them in these spaces so that we can soon experiment how our everyday life may change if sustainable, responsible and inclusive Multiple Places would be the new urban normal in our city!<\/em><\/p>

Your Mayor<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As explained by the Mayor in a fake briefing to the students (see box above), the expected Multiple Places projects are to cover different functions of everyday life, each starting from a typical identified partner actor of the urban context (a post office, a museum, a suburban railway station, a primary school, a supermarket, etc.). They seek to explore how, starting from the 8 vacant spaces adjacent to each actor (the closed mail sorting workshop behind the post office, the empty rooms of part of the museum, the former reception desk of the station, now out of service, etc.) (see map of the experimental area below), how a second partner actor could settle there in a form of temporary occupation and thus create a new Multiple Place together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.1 STORIES POT<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the empty building next to the offices and counters for foreigners, the immigration department of the city administration is hosting a cultural facility for theatrical creation and storytelling, focusing on the cultures of newcomers. The common entrance of the 2 institutions transforms the usual austerity of the Foreigners’ Reception Services and highlights the cultures of the world through the theatre’s programme, the posters of the shows, the story library, etc. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

STORIES POT<\/strong> brings together in one place two institutions that are usually completely separated, even though they are often only a few hundred metres apart in the city. But putting them together completely changes the meaning: people from elsewhere are immediately seen as a welcome richness, an increase in cultural socio-diversity. The actions of the agents of the cultural equipment, which are geared towards listening to the world and understanding otherness, seek to influence the actions of the agents responsible for controlling and regulating foreigners. The message conveyed to the population is one of cultural mediation and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.2 HEALTHY ESTATE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The green areas surrounding the hospital are occupied by an organic urban farm. This farm supplies a large part of the hospital’s kitchens and, above all, offers a patient care environment focused on healthy eating and a balanced anchorage in the culture of the earth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rapprochement between the two structures that make up HEALTHY ESTATE<\/strong> therefore operates on several levels: the supply of healthy hyper-local products for a balanced and sustainable food during the patients’ stay in the hospital; the sensitisation of the latter to a quality food, to the consumption of healthy, little processed products, reinforcing their immune defences and thus their chances of recovery; the transformation of a strictly medical environment into a place of mental reconstruction through the rhythms of nature, the participation in light farm tasks or simply the soothing and rebalancing benefits of an agricultural environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.3 ART ESCAPE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A museum of contemporary art is located next to and collaborates with a detention facility for offenders serving light sentences. The museum’s environment transforms the prison environment. The inmates are not relegated to the side-lines of society, but rather their sentence is spent in society. The museum and the works of art in it offer a context of detention from which they are excluded in the usual prison environment and often from which they have always been excluded during their lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In addition, prisoners and visitors are brought together. In the manner of social reintegration structures through vocational training, the prisoners are the employees of the museum. They work alongside the museum staff: they are introduced to the programming of exhibitions, trained to guide tours, assist the museum guards in the rooms and participate in the maintenance of the premises. Art therapy and mindfulness sessions based on the museum’s collections are open to visitors and inmates. Together, they cross-reference motivations and life paths. In the manner of restorative justice, ART ESCAPE<\/strong> seeks to restore the relationship between offenders and citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.4 ALTERNATIVE LIFESTORE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Part of the vacant spaces of an energy marketing company is used to house a furnishing and sales shop for domestic products. The latter, like a showroom, offers the presentation and demonstration of equipment allowing to reduce domestic energy consumption and by extension to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. But, more than a usual showroom, the shop provides commercial logistics for selling these products and services for the transition of daily practices to households.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The customers of the energy distribution company can thus directly find solutions to reduce their energy bills. But more importantly, the customers of the home furnishing shop will find themselves in the presence of a low-energy kitchen, a water-saving bathroom and all the related domestic equipment. ALTERNATIVE LIFESTORE<\/strong>, like a \u00ab\u00a0lifestyle store\u00a0\u00bb,<\/em>not only offers more sustainable household components but also offers them in different lifestyles that different customer profiles are likely to recognise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Four other Multiple Places explore combinations of usually separate city actors. AGEDUCATION<\/strong> brings together a kindergarten and a home for the elderly offering intergenerational synergies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SEE YOU LETTER!<\/strong> offers the vacant space left by a sorting office behind a post office to artists whose workshops and exhibitions on the theme of postal art interact with post office customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RESCUTE<\/strong> hosts an animal shelter in the empty hall of a suburban train station, re-engaging pets with travellers for possible adoption. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, COMMON MARK<\/strong> adds to the supermarket an international hostel whose visitors animate the sales space <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an experimental workshop, the 8 combinations of Multiple Places produced by the different student groups are more or less ambitious and relevant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than analysing them one by one, the Mayor’s briefing invites us to consider them as a whole: an experimental district offering the neighbouring inhabitants Multiple Places addressing urban functions potentially impacting more or less on the issues of social inclusion, sustainable development and urban resilience posed as starting points. Beyond their value and meaning, it also offers a minimum density of Multiple Places to reason in terms of lifestyles and induce, if necessary, a transition in daily practices.Finally, and this time from the point of view of the infrastructure, the co-design process between the students highlighted the fact that the Multiples Places are made up of two structures that are close to each other but disjointed. Their spatial proximity induces forms of collaboration, partnership, synergies, etc. in terms of use without implying a fusion of the business models of each structure. In other words, the financial involvement of the stakeholders, the risk if the new Multiple Place model does not prove successful, does not imply the bankruptcy of each of the parties, who can continue to coexist with more or less collaboration between them. In other words, the Multiple Places hypothesis is more a question of urban planning, of temporary urbanism, of physically bringing together usually disjointed structures than of entrepreneurial creation. This point adds to the residency of the Multiple Places hypothesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. PRESUMED EFFECTS<\/strong> OF THE MULTIPLE PLACES<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In summary, the Multiple Places that emerged from the short experimentation of this workshop with the students of the Politecnico, appear as micro-laboratories where new ways of making society are experimented with, where the usual functions that make up the urban context are remixed in order to attempt new combinations. Some of the 8 combinations examined are more ambitious than others and seems more or less meaningful in the face of the social and environmental challenges of the city. Let us now come back to our initial question by examining the results of the projective test on the uses of the second part of the workshop: are the Multiple Places likely to generate more sustainable, inclusive and resilient daily practices among the inhabitants who would have access to these infrastructures in their neighbourhoods, in a walking distance from their homes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2.1 SIMULATED USE EXPERIMENT<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the second half of the workshop week, the 8 student sub-groups change roles: from designers of a specific Multiple Place, they become testers of all 8 Multiple Places created in the first part of the workshop. To do this, each sub-group is asked to embody a given persona described by a few socio-behavioural characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students have to imagine in 4-5 minutes of video, a narrative strategy telling the experience that their persona has of the 8 Multiple Places in their neighbourhood: Anita, a new inhabitant who arrives from Berlin, discovers the city and tells about her first experiences of the neighbourhood’s Multiple Places; Giacomo engaged in a series of short phone conversations telling friends and relatives about salient moments of his daily life in the neighbourhood; David, a father who struggles to manage his unruly young son on his own; Maria, handicapped by a recent accident that forces her to reinvent the way of living in a wheelchair everyday; Sonia, who cares for her grandmother whose Alzheimer’s is deteriorating; Flavia and Karina, who are raising their 3-year-old daughter Nina; Luciana and Maruka, who have not seen each other for a long time and tell each other about their lives by looking at photos taken at the time in the Multiple Places they used to frequent; <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, and perhaps the most efficient form of narration for our purpose, a conversation between Marzia, and her therapist: this narrative strategy involves introspection and questioning of the patient about her experiences of the Multiple Places, how they challenged her habits and changed her daily practices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

These 8 parallel narrative exercises form a matrix systematically crossing the 8 Multiple Places of the neighbourhood. In each short video, the postulated persona evokes each Multiple Place, explains how he or she discovered or practiced it and gives their perception of it from their own point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can be said about the analysis of this simulated use experience of Multiple Places? What are the potential effects of the Multiple Places on the lifestyles of the different types of inhabitants of the neighbourhood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2 A POTENTIAL TO CHALLENGE <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are so many new things happening here<\/em>,\u00a0\u00bb Giacomo tells his friend Lisa, talking about the Multiple Places, \u00ab\u00a0it takes you out of your comfort zone!\u201d<\/em>. At first glance, the Multiple Places appear naturally, by the very fact that they bring together functions that are usually disjointed in urban space, as alternatives, as different proposals whose experience forces, or at least encourages, people to question their own practices and to change their lifestyles. Some associations sometimes seem disturbing and require time for users to adapt: visitors to ART ESCAPE are not very comfortable with the presence of delinquents; the animation activities of AGEDUCATION or COMMON MARK disturb the users of these spaces as coworking; the collection of personal stories does not immediately convince the newcomers who come to the offices of STORY POT; etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In continuity with the principle of third places, they constitute alternatives, extensions of usual domestic and workspaces. They encourage people to live together in a way that is less focused on individual private space and more open to the collective. They imply more fluidity, more confrontation with otherness, more crossings. The video narratives include many fictitious testimonies in which we hear people who are rather reluctant at first, but who finally let themselves be convinced by the collective experience…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2.3 MORE SYNERGIES AND RESOURCES<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0We think it is important for our little Nina to grow up surrounded by elderly people, to pass on to her things that are more valuable<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0, says Flavia about AGEDUCATION, bringing together a nursery school and a care centre for the elderly. Her partner Karina adds: \u00ab\u00a0With our difficult working hours, we need a flexible solution to look after her, but one that is also more economical.\u201d<\/em>Bringing structures together offers new synergies in terms of values, practices and economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonia also finds more collective support to take care of her grandmother whose Alzheimer’s is deteriorating. The Multiple Places are collaborative spaces, communities for caring for people who are fragile or in difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Maria, following the serious accident that immobilised her in a wheelchair, attends HEALTHY ESTATE, which brings together a hospital and an organic farm: \u00ab\u00a0I am surrounded by people who cultivate plants. It helps me to relax even if I can’t actively participate. The presence of an organic farm helps to cope with life’s accidents by reclassifying the hospital as a place of care beyond its strictly medical function. \u201cI am surrounded and guided<\/em>, Maria continues, by people who help me and give me suggestions\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Multiples Places ‘build community’<\/em>and encourage inclusion. At an individual level, for Marzia in depression, they are places of re-socialisation following a personal crisis. Luciana and Maruka agree that on their arrival \u00ab\u00a0the Multiple Places helped us to connect with the local people<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anita, as a result of her travels between the Multiple Places, feels that she \u00ab\u00a0is now part of a community\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2.4 A TRANSFORMATION OF PRACTICES<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Multiples places seem to induce a greater daily mobility within the neighbourhood: their users seem to move constantly from one Place to another. Maria’s reduced mobility after her accident is evidence of this: it is both a difficulty for her to move from one place to another. But it is also an advantage that she is not isolated in a mono-functional place like the administration office where she works, hybridised with a theatre. This mobility adds fluidity and even a small dose of disruption, which is beneficial in challenging daily routines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Multiplaces act as demonstrators or at least examples of sustainable lifestyles: the products of the HEALTHY ESTATE farm, the ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE STORE, etc. These demonstrators could have a greater potential impact in transforming everyday practices: Multiple Places are not just places that one visits for an errand or a service. They are temporary living spaces, where you can get in touch with more sustainable ways of living, where you can try out new everyday practices in real life without having to make a definitive commitment. In this sense, they are much more likely to be a means of transition, triggering deeper and more lasting transformations because their users have a transformative experience alongside their peers, over a longer period of time, an experience that is repeated and, above all, that is not exceptional but part of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.5 TOWARDS MORE RESILIENT COMMUNITIES?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

These few elements drawn from the collective analysis made with the students at the end of the workshop are far from covering all the potential of Multiple Places, but they point to promising directions on how daily life in a neighbourhood would be if Multiple Places became the new norm. In particular, they seem to us to provide a level of inclusive community, collective, collaborative spaces that are sorely lacking in the urban fabric between private and public spaces. The Multiple Places encourage a confrontation with otherness, with different points of view that reinforce agility, force flexibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The users navigate between these places which extend the domestic space and are integrated into it as forms of extended domestic spaces[7]<\/sup><\/a>. They go beyond daily routines and therefore have the potential to transition lifestyles. Finally, they seem to ensure a new integration of functions which produces a multiplier effect of resources, synergies between stakeholders, towards, in fine, a greater urban resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. <\/strong>RADICAL IN VITRO<\/strong> EXPERIMENTATION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Between forms of fictional design, explorations that break with current practices and forms of design that are, on the contrary, centred on practices, the workshop proposes to explore an approach that is both speculative and in vitro, but which at the same time integrates a form of user testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is different from a classic didactic exercise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.1 AN EXPERIMENTAL COLLECTIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD PROJECT<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

First of all, whereas usually each sub-group of designers works on a project hypothesis independent of that of the others, here they are all collaborating on the same project, responding to the same injunction from the Mayor to co-construct, in a medium-sized city, an experiment on the scale of a neighbourhood. The 8 projects of multiple places carried out in parallel in the workshop are complementary. The challenge of the exercise is therefore to discuss whether, together and not individually, the 8 Multiple Places created in the experimental district are likely to change the daily practices of the inhabitants towards more sustainable, responsible and inclusive lifestyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.2 A FORM OF IN VITRO USER TESTING<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The second originality of this didactic exercise is to ask the groups of designers to test all 8 Multiple Places. Again, where each group usually screens its own project with different user profiles, here during the second half of the workshop, each group takes a different persona through the 8 Multiple Places, the one they have created but also the 7 others created by the other groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a simulated test configuration, admittedly in vitro but much more realistic. The possible complacency of each group with regard to its own creation and the use that would be made of it transform into critical spirit: \u00ab\u00a0AGEDUCATION is designed to accommodate young children and elderly people, our persona, a single thirty-year-old living alone in the neighbourhood, does not fit in!\u201d<\/em>. The fact that each group focuses on a single persona allows it to be truly embodied, to integrate more deeply its daily practices and psychological characteristics. In particular, it applies them transversally, to the 8 Multiple Places, to assess whether they are \u00ab\u00a0actionable\u00a0\u00bb together, whether their combined use by a single parent household, a person with a disability, a retired couple, etc. forms a coherent lifestyle, whether it is attractive, plausible and whether it would be likely to lead to more sustainable, responsible and inclusive practices?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.3 DARING TO ADOPT MORE RADICAL TRANSITION SCENARIOS<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0You are sometimes a bit too much of a service designer!\u201d.<\/em> The PSSD Master’s students are used to fine-tuning the analysis of usage problems in which they excel in order to deduce a new service solution. Here, incremental innovation is not enough. There is no specific problem to be solved but a transition of new lifestyles to be invented. We are not so much looking for what a post office, a railway station or a school would need as a partner in order to function better within their remit, but what new and original partnership, what atypical and explosive cocktail would be capable of shaking up the daily routines of the neighbourhood, of getting the inhabitants out of their comfort zones? The designers should take a few more risks, look for more radical associations within Multiple Places? This is where the culinary metaphor \u00ab\u00a0broccoli and chocolate\u00a0\u00bb comes from, to encourage designers to explore the counter-intuitive, to dare the improbable, to try out configurations that have not yet been imagined in the context of this experimental lab that is this week-long workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students felt a bit uncomfortable to undertake a reversed design process compared to the traditional one they were used to adopt. In the previous courses they had, they were trained to do research with potential users, find their needs and then answer to them with their solution. In this course, we provoked them and the design process itself, is trying to do the opposite. Start from imagination to consider scenarios that would unlikely been taken into consideration the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could be this a successful way to \u00ab\u00a0encourage wild ideas\u00a0\u00bb, as the mantra of Design Thinking states, in a strangestl way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, it is unlikely that challenges as radical as the social and environmental transition do not also require a little radicality in the design approach…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.4 ORGANISING A COLLECTIVE SELF-CRITICISM OF INNOVATION<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Once these initial hesitations have been overcome, the result is rich. The Multiple Places go beyond the usual typologies of third places: a hospital with a farm, a museum with a prison, an administrative service with a theatre, etc. Within and between groups of students, the debates on the personas, their adherence to the proposals and their chances of changing their daily practices are intense and contrasted, reflecting the multicultural richness of the PSSD students. What started out as an in vitro experiment, a didactic exercise in a room, became more interesting and realistic. The number of designers – about fifty – their social and cultural diversity – more than fifteen nationalities present – guarantees a strong critique in terms of the usability of solutions and the involvement in lifestyle transitions. The design architecture crossed with that of the simulation of uses outlined above makes the most of the group of students as as \u00ab\u00a0designer-users\u00a0\u00bb. The change in posture halfway through the project is sometimes disturbing: the same groups of creatives who show ambitious and open imagination when it comes to their project are often more critical and even sometimes a little conservative when they explore the potential uses of the other groups’ projects! For example, David, Flavia and Karina, Maruka express doubts about the presence of offenders during visits to the ART ESCAPE museum; Anita complains about the limited choice offered by HEALTHY ESTATE, etc. This curious bias of resistance to innovation, even among those whose job it is, tends to reinforce the idea that this simulation of peer testing in the absence of real users goes beyond the exercise of complacency and has a real critical dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.5 WIPING THE FLOOR OF TRANSITION SCENARIOS…<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The urgency of the environmental and social transition tends to call into question the incremental and voluntary innovation approaches characteristic of design approaches: a long time is needed for co-creation with users, gradual adoption of solutions, slow adaptation of daily practices… This urgency calls for experimentation with new approaches such as the one presented here, combining a use-oriented posture and a more radical questioning of lifestyles. This approach allows for an in vitro refinement of the actionability of transition scenarios before setting in motion a process of in vivo<\/em>co-design and all the investment in social and financial capital and the gamble on the limited time that it represents. The search for such an \u00ab\u00a0accelerated design\u00a0\u00bb approach to transition is indeed the object of the experimentation attempted by this week’s workshop at the Politecnico in Milan. The multiplicity of points of view exchanged within the large and heterogeneous group of designers assumes a \u00ab\u00a0pre-test\u00a0\u00bb value in the face of the hypothesis of Multiple Places as vectors of behavioural transformation. This experimental approach has its place in the process of exploring the levers of transition towards more sustainable lifestyles: it allows us to envisage riskier, more radical solutions, to assess their interest, to adjust their acceptability and relevance, to estimate their potential as a local transition scenario to be proposed as a working hypothesis before embarking on a process of in vivo<\/em>co-elaboration with the inhabitants of a neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un plat cuisin\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de brocolis et de chocolat, a priori \u00e7a ne donne pas tr\u00e8s envie. En fait, personne ne sait vraiment si c\u2019est bon ou pas. Peut-\u00eatre passe-t\u2019on \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 d\u2019un \u00ab sucr\u00e9-sal\u00e9 \u00bb int\u00e9ressant ? Nous nous fions \u00e0 nos a priori mais au fond, personne n\u2019a jamais essay\u00e9\u2026 N\u2019est-ce pas un peu comme toute innovation radicale qui suppose de sortir de notre zone de confort, et d\u2019oser explorer des associations contre-intuitives ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette semaine d\u2019atelier au Politecnico de Milan, nous avons demand\u00e9 aux \u00e9tudiants de prendre des risques en inventant des \u00ab Lieux Multiples \u00bb, de d\u00e9passer les typologies habituelles des services qui forment la ville, de se faire un peu violence pour concocter des m\u00e9langes atypiques et peut-\u00eatre prometteurs\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. UNE VILLE COLLABORATIVE DE \u00ab LIEUX MULTIPLES \u00bb<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mais d\u2019abord qu\u2019est-ce que l\u2019on entend par des \u00a0\u00bb lieux multiples \u00a0\u00bb ? Une ann\u00e9e durant, charg\u00e9 du commissariat de la Maison POC Ville Collaborative[1]<\/sup><\/a>dans le cadre de Lille M\u00e9tropole 2020, Capitale Mondiale du Design, nous avons rencontr\u00e9 plus de 80 acteurs du territoire de la m\u00e9tropole dont les projets nous ont frapp\u00e9s parce qu\u2019ils \u00e9taient bas\u00e9s sur des lieux qui m\u00ealaient diff\u00e9rentes fonctions : une cantine-conciergerie en pied d\u2019immeuble d\u2019une r\u00e9sidence sociale[2]<\/sup><\/a>, un laboratoire d\u2019\u00e9cole d\u2019art dans un d\u00e9partement de business management d\u2019une universit\u00e9[3]<\/sup><\/a>, un espace de travail pour les usagers dans le hall d’entr\u00e9e d\u2019une administration publique[4]<\/sup><\/a>, un lieu de travail \u00e0 distance dans une gare de p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie[5]<\/sup><\/a>, un repair-caf\u00e9 dans un incubateur d\u2019activit\u00e9s[6]<\/sup><\/a>, un fablab dans un centre d\u2019accueil de jour pour enfants handicap\u00e9s[7]<\/sup><\/a>, un espace de travail ouvert aux collectivit\u00e9s locales dans l\u2019entr\u00e9e d\u2019une entreprise d\u2019assainissement et de traitement des d\u00e9chets[8]<\/sup><\/a>, etc. et toute une s\u00e9rie de lieux \u00e9mergents int\u00e9grant des fonctions multiples et remixant les cat\u00e9gories classiques du tissu urbain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’\u00e9mergence de ce large \u00e9ventail de lieux touche toutes les fonctions de la vie quotidienne en ville : travail, alimentation, divertissement, \u00e9ducation, sant\u00e9, social, etc. et semblent toucher des cat\u00e9gories de population les plus diverses. Plus que des tiers-lieux ou troisi\u00e8me lieu apr\u00e8s la maison et le travail, ces espaces sociaux semblent caract\u00e9ris\u00e9s par le fait d\u2019associer deux entit\u00e9s distinctes, juxtapos\u00e9es mais pas pour autant hybrid\u00e9es. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous les avons appel\u00e9s des \u00ab lieux multiples \u00bb et nous avons cherch\u00e9 lors de la conf\u00e9rence DxCC Design for Collaborative Cities Lille[1]<\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/sup>\u00e0 analyser comment ces associations souvent tr\u00e8s atypiques entre des lieux typiques de l\u2019univers urbain semblaient provoquer des changements de pratique chez les usagers de ces m\u00eames lieux : m\u00e9lange des populations du quartier et de la r\u00e9sidence sociale dans la cantine-conciergerie, inclusion des enfants porteurs de handicap et des autres enfants dans le m\u00eame fablab, augmentation du travail \u00e0 distance chez les passagers de la gare, renforcement des liens entre l\u2019incubateur d\u2019activit\u00e9s et la population du quartier, transversalit\u00e9 entre les services administratifs partageant un m\u00eame hall d\u2019entr\u00e9e, collaboration entre l\u2019entreprise d\u2019assainissement et les collectivit\u00e9s locales clientes, etc. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

En continuit\u00e9 de ces explorations, cette semaine d\u2019atelier avec une cinquantaine d\u2019\u00e9tudiants de la section PSSD Product Service System Design du Politecnico de Milan cherchait \u00e0 explorer un sc\u00e9nario urbain dans lequel les lieux multiples deviendraient la nouvelle normalit\u00e9 dans les villes, avec un double objectif : d\u2019une part r\u00e9inventer une ville \u00e0 travers la conception de lieux multiples r\u00e9pondant aux nouvelles contraintes mais aussi aux opportunit\u00e9s fa\u00e7onn\u00e9es par la pand\u00e9mie et, d’autre part, explorer si la vie quotidienne d’une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de profils de population passant par diff\u00e9rents lieux multiples deviendrait plus durable, inclusive, r\u00e9silience.Cette exp\u00e9rimentation nous semble int\u00e9ressante sous au moins 2 aspects que nous nous proposons de regarder de plus pr\u00e8s dans cet article : une collecte des effets pr\u00e9sum\u00e9s des lieux multiples sur les modes de vie urbains d\u2019une part et d\u2019autre part, une approche m\u00e9thodologique d\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation radicale in-vitro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce r\u00e9seau nous a permis d’apprendre pendant 3 ans de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience d\u2019autres villes europ\u00e9ennes homologues. J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement impressionn\u00e9 par un enseignement majeur du r\u00e9seau : nous avons particip\u00e9 \u00e0 ce programme avec l’id\u00e9e d’apprendre \u00e0 r\u00e9duire le pourcentage des espaces vacants de nos villes et, si possible, de nous d\u00e9barrasser de ce probl\u00e8me. Nous terminons les 3 ann\u00e9es de collaboration entre toutes les villes partenaires en reconnaissant que les espaces vacants repr\u00e9sentent une opportunit\u00e9 incroyable pour inventer la ville, pour co-cr\u00e9er de nouvelles solutions urbaines, pour les tester en collaboration avec la population et les acteurs locaux \u00e0 travers des formes d\u2019utilisation temporaire de ces espaces vacants. A Gand en Belgique, \u00e0 Nantes en France, \u00e0 Br\u00eame en Allemagne, par le biais d’une utilisation temporaire, les acteurs exp\u00e9rimentent les projets d\u2019urbanisme avant de r\u00e9am\u00e9nager la ville.<\/em><\/p>

Je voudrais aujourd’hui vous inviter \u00e0 explorer le potentiel des Lieux Multiples pour favoriser de nouveaux modes de vie plus durables, responsables et inclusifs dans notre ville. Pour cela, nous avons identifi\u00e9 8 espaces vacants dans ce que nous aimerions appeler d\u00e9sormais notre Quartier Exp\u00e9rimental. Je vous invite \u00e0 imaginer des Lieux Multiples li\u00e9s aux grandes fonctions de la vie quotidienne dans la ville et \u00e0 les mettre en \u0153uvre dans ces espaces vacants afin que nous puissions exp\u00e9rimenter comment nos modes de vie urbains pourraient changer si des lieux multiples durables, responsables et inclusifs devenaient la nouvelle norme dans notre ville !<\/em><\/p>

Comme l\u2019explique le Maire dans un briefing fictif aux \u00e9tudiants (voir encadr\u00e9 ci-dessus), les projets de Lieux Multiples attendus doivent couvrir diff\u00e9rentes fonctions de la vie quotidienne partant chacun d\u2019un acteur partenaire identifi\u00e9 classique de l\u2019univers urbain (un bureau de poste, un mus\u00e9e, une gare de banlieue, une \u00e9cole primaire, un supermarch\u00e9, etc.). Ils cherchent \u00e0 explorer comment \u00e0 partir de 8 espaces vacants jouxtant chaque acteur (l\u2019atelier de tri ferm\u00e9 derri\u00e8re de bureau de poste, les salles vides d\u2019une partie du mus\u00e9e, l\u2019ancien guichet d\u2019accueil de la gare aujourd\u2019hui condamn\u00e9, etc.) (voir plan du quartier exp\u00e9rimental ci-dessous), comment un second acteur partenaire pourrait s\u2019y installer dans une forme d\u2019occupation temporaire et cr\u00e9er ainsi \u00e0 deux un nouveau Lieu Multiple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Service immigration de l\u2019administration de la ville accueille, dans l\u2019immeuble vide qui jouxte les bureaux et guichets pour les populations \u00e9trang\u00e8res, un \u00e9quipement culturel tourn\u00e9 vers la cr\u00e9ation th\u00e9\u00e2trale et la collecte d\u2019histoires avec comme focus les cultures des primo-arrivants. L\u2019entr\u00e9e commune des 2 institutions transfigure l\u2019aust\u00e9rit\u00e9 habituelle des Services d\u2019accueil des \u00e9trangers et met en valeur les cultures du monde \u00e0 travers la programmation du th\u00e9\u00e2tre, les affiches des spectacles, la biblioth\u00e8que \u00e0 histoires, etc. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

STORIES POT<\/strong> op\u00e8re un rapprochement dans un m\u00eame lieu entre deux institutions habituellement compl\u00e8tement s\u00e9par\u00e9es m\u00eame si elles ne sont souvent distantes que de quelques centaines de m\u00e8tres dans la ville. Mais ce rapprochement en change compl\u00e8tement le sens : les populations venues d\u2019ailleurs sont d\u2019embl\u00e9e connot\u00e9es comme une richesse bienvenue, une augmentation de la socio-diversit\u00e9 culturelle. L\u2019action des agents de l\u2019\u00e9quipement culturel tourn\u00e9e vers l\u2019\u00e9coute du monde, la compr\u00e9hension de l\u2019alt\u00e9rit\u00e9 cherche \u00e0 influencer celle des agents charg\u00e9s du contr\u00f4le et de la r\u00e9gulation des \u00e9trangers. Le message port\u00e9 vers la population est celui de la m\u00e9diation culturelle et de l\u2019inclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les espaces verts qui entourent l\u2019h\u00f4pital sont occup\u00e9s par une ferme urbaine bio. Celle-ci assure une grande partie de l\u2019approvisionnement des cuisines de l\u2019h\u00f4pital et surtout offre un environnement de soin des patients tourn\u00e9 vers l\u2019alimentation sant\u00e9 et l\u2019ancrage \u00e9quilibrant dans la culture de la terre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le rapprochement entre les deux structures qui constituent HEALTHY ESTATE<\/strong> op\u00e8re donc \u00e0 plusieurs niveaux : l\u2019approvisionnement en produits sains hyper-locaux pour une nourriture \u00e9quilibr\u00e9e et durable pendant le s\u00e9jour des patients \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital ; la sensibilisation de ces derniers \u00e0 une alimentation de qualit\u00e9, \u00e0 la consommation de produits sains, peu transform\u00e9s, renfor\u00e7ant leur d\u00e9fenses immunitaires et donc leurs chances de r\u00e9tablissement ; la transformation d\u2019un environnement strictement m\u00e9dical vers un lieu de reconstruction mentale par les rythmes de la nature, la participation \u00e0 des t\u00e2ches l\u00e9g\u00e8res de la ferme ou simplement le b\u00e9n\u00e9fice apaisant et r\u00e9\u00e9quilibrant d\u2019un environnement agricole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.3 ART ESCAPE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Un mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain avoisine et collabore avec un \u00e9tablissement de d\u00e9tention accueillant des d\u00e9linquants purgeant des peines l\u00e9g\u00e8res. L\u2019environnement du mus\u00e9e transfigure celui de l\u2019univers carc\u00e9ral. Les d\u00e9tenus ne sont pas mis aux bancs de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 mais au contraire, leur peine se passe en soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Le mus\u00e9e et les \u0153uvres d\u2019art qui s\u2019y trouvent offrent un contexte de d\u00e9tention dont ils sont exclus dans l\u2019univers carc\u00e9ral classique et bien souvent, dont ils ont toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 exclus au cours de leur vie. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

De plus d\u00e9tenus et visiteurs sont amen\u00e9s \u00e0 se c\u00f4toyer. A la mani\u00e8re des structures de r\u00e9insertion sociales par la formation professionnelle, les d\u00e9tenus sont les employ\u00e9s du mus\u00e9e. Ils travaillent aux cot\u00e9s des agents du mus\u00e9e : ils sont initi\u00e9s \u00e0 la programmation des expositions, form\u00e9s \u00e0 guider des visites, \u00e0 seconder les gardiens des salles et participer \u00e0 l\u2019entretien des locaux. Les sessions d\u2019art-th\u00e9rapie et d\u2019ouverture \u00e0 la pleine conscience partant des collections du mus\u00e9e sont ouvertes aux visiteurs et aux d\u00e9tenus. Ensemble, ils croisent motivations et parcours de vie. Ce dernier, \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un showroom offre la pr\u00e9sentation et la d\u00e9monstration d\u2019\u00e9quipements permettant de r\u00e9duire sa consommation domestique d\u2019\u00e9nergie et par extension d\u2019adopter un mode de vie plus durable. Mais, plus qu\u2019un showroom classique le magasin assure une logistique commerciale de vente aux m\u00e9nages de ces produits et services de transition des pratiques quotidiennes. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

En tant qu\u2019atelier d\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation, les 8 combinaisons de Lieux Multiples produites par les diff\u00e9rents groupes d\u2019\u00e9tudiants sont plus ou moins ambitieuses et pertinentes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus que les analyser une \u00e0 une, le briefing du Maire nous invite \u00e0 les consid\u00e9rer dans leur ensemble comme un quartier exp\u00e9rimental offrant aux habitants avoisinants des Lieux Multiples adressant des fonctions urbaines impactant potentiellement plus ou moins les questions d\u2019inclusions sociales, de d\u00e9veloppement soutenable et de r\u00e9silience urbaine pos\u00e9es comme points de d\u00e9part. Mais au-del\u00e0 de leur valeur et de leur sens, elle offre une densit\u00e9 minimum de Lieux Multiples pour raisonner en termes de modes de vie et induire le cas \u00e9ch\u00e9ant une transition des pratiques quotidiennes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin, et cette fois du point de vue de l\u2019infrastructure, le processus de co-design entre les \u00e9tudiants a mis en \u00e9vidence que les Lieux Multiples sont constitu\u00e9s de deux structures rapproch\u00e9es mais disjointes. Leur proximit\u00e9 spatiale induit des formes de collaboration, partenariat, synergies, etc. en mati\u00e8re d\u2019usage sans pour autant impliquer une fusion des mod\u00e8les d\u2019affaire de chaque structure. Autrement dit, l\u2019implication financi\u00e8re des acteurs, le risque si le nouveau mod\u00e8le de Lieu Multiple ne s\u2019av\u00e9rait pas concluant, n\u2019implique pas la faillite de chacune des parties qui peuvent continuer \u00e0 coexister avec plus ou moins de collaboration entre elles. Encore en d\u2019autres termes, l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se de Lieux Multiples rel\u00e8ve plus d\u2019une question d\u2019am\u00e9nagement urbain, d\u2019urbanisme temporaire, de rapprochement physique de structures habituellement disjointe que de cr\u00e9ation entrepreneuriale. IEn synth\u00e8se, les Lieux Multiples qui \u00e9mergent de la courte exp\u00e9rimentation de cet atelier avec les \u00e9tudiants du Politecnico, apparaissent comme autant de micro-laboratoires o\u00f9 s\u2019exp\u00e9rimente de nouvelles mani\u00e8res de faire soci\u00e9t\u00e9, o\u00f9 l\u2019on remixe les fonctions classiques qui constituent l\u2019univers urbain pour tenter des nouveaux m\u00e9langes. Certains des 8 m\u00e9langes examin\u00e9s sont plus ambitieux que d\u2019autres et font plus ou moins sens face aux d\u00e9fis sociaux et environnementaux de la ville. Revenons maintenant \u00e0 notre question initiale en examinant les r\u00e9sultats du test projectif sur les usages de la seconde partie de l\u2019atelier : les Lieux Multiples sont-ils susceptibles de g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des pratiques quotidiennes plus soutenables, inclusives et r\u00e9silientes chez les habitant.e.s qui auraient acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ces infrastructures dans leur quartier, \u00e0 distance de marche de leur logement ?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.1 EXP\u00c9RIENCE D\u2019USAGE SIMUL\u00c9<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Dans la seconde moiti\u00e9 de la semaine d\u2019atelier, les 8 sous-groupes d\u2019\u00e9tudiant.e.s changent de r\u00f4le : de designers d\u2019un Lieu Multiple sp\u00e9cifique, ils deviennent essayeurs de l\u2019ensemble des 8 Lieux Multiples cr\u00e9es dans la premi\u00e8re partie de l\u2019atelier. Pour cela chaque sous-groupe est charg\u00e9 d\u2019incarner un\u00a0persona<\/em>donn\u00e9 d\u00e9crit par quelques caract\u00e9ristiques socio-comportementales sommaires.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les \u00e9tudiant.e.s proposent une strat\u00e9gie narrative racontant l\u2019exp\u00e9rience que leur persona<\/em>a des 8 Lieux Multiples de son quartier en 4-5 minutes de vid\u00e9o : Anita, une nouvelle habitante qui d\u00e9barque de Berlin, d\u00e9couvre la ville et raconte ses premi\u00e8res exp\u00e9rience des Lieux Multiples du quartier ; Giacomo engag\u00e9 dans une s\u00e9rie de br\u00e8ves conversations t\u00e9l\u00e9phoniques relatant \u00e0 des amis et parents des moments saillants de son quotidien ; David, un p\u00e8re qui peine \u00e0 g\u00e9rer seul son jeune fils turbulent ; Maria, handicap\u00e9e par un r\u00e9cent accident qui l\u2019oblige a r\u00e9inventer la mani\u00e8re de vivre au quotidien dans un fauteuil roulant ; Sonia, qui prend soin de sa grand-m\u00e8re dont l\u2019Alzheimer se d\u00e9grade ; Flavia and Karina qui \u00e9l\u00e8vent Nina, leur petite fille de 3 ans ; Luciana et Maruka qui ne se sont pas vues depuis longtemps et se racontent leurs vies en regardant des photos prises alors dans les Lieux Multiples qu\u2019elles fr\u00e9quentaient ; <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces 8 exercices narratifs parall\u00e8les forment une matrice croisant syst\u00e9matiquement les 8 Lieux Multiples du quartier. En premi\u00e8re analyse, les Lieux Multiples apparaissent naturellement par le fait m\u00eame de croiser des fonctions habituellement disjointes dans l\u2019espace urbain, comme des alternatives, des propositions diff\u00e9rentes dont l\u2019exp\u00e9rience force ou, au moins incite \u00e0 la remise en question de ses propres pratiques, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution des modes de vie. Certaines associations semblent parfois perturbantes et demande un temps d\u2019adaptation aux usagers\u00a0: les visiteurs de ART ESCAPE ne sont tr\u00e8s \u00e0 l\u2019aise avec la pr\u00e9sence de d\u00e9linquants\u00a0; les activit\u00e9s d\u2019animation de AGEDUCATION ou de COMMON MARK perturbent les utilisateurs de ces espaces comme coworking\u00a0; la collecte d\u2019histoires personnelle ne convainc pas imm\u00e9diatement les primo-arrivants qui se pr\u00e9sentent aux bureaux de STORY POT\u00a0; etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En continuit\u00e9 du principe des tiers-lieux, ils constituent autant d\u2019alternatives, d\u2019extensions des espaces domestiques et de travaux classiques. Ils incitent \u00e0 vivre plus ensemble un quotidien moins centr\u00e9 sur l\u2019espace priv\u00e9 individuel, plus ouvert sur le collectif. Ils impliquent plus de fluidit\u00e9, plus de confrontation \u00e0 l\u2019alt\u00e9rit\u00e9, plus de croisements. Les narrations vid\u00e9o comprennent de multiples t\u00e9moignages fictifs o\u00f9 l\u2019on entend des gens plut\u00f4t frileux, r\u00e9ticents au d\u00e9part qui finalement se laissent convaincre par l\u2019exp\u00e9rience collective\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2.4 UNE TRANSFORMATION DES PRATIQUES<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Les lieux Multiples semblent induire une plus grande mobilit\u00e9 quotidienne au sein du quartier : leurs usag\u00e9s semblent passer constamment d\u2019un Lieu \u00e0 l\u2019autre. La mobilit\u00e9 r\u00e9duite de Maria apr\u00e8s son accident en t\u00e9moigne : c\u2019est \u00e0 la fois une difficult\u00e9 pour elle dont les d\u00e9placements pour passer d\u2019un lieu \u00e0 l\u2019autre sont plus difficiles. Mais c\u2019est aussi un avantage de ne pas se trouver isol\u00e9e dans un lieu mono fonctionnel comme le bureau de l\u2019administration o\u00f9 elle travaille hybrid\u00e9e avec un th\u00e9\u00e2tre. Cette mobilit\u00e9 ajoute de la fluidit\u00e9 voire une petite dose de perturbation b\u00e9n\u00e9fique \u00e0 la remise en question des routines quotidiennes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certains Lieux Multiples agissent comme des d\u00e9monstrateurs ou au moins des exemples de modes de vie durables : les produits de la ferme\u00a0HEALTHY ESTATE<\/em>, le magasin d\u00e9monstrateur de mode de vie durable\u00a0ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE STORE<\/em>, etc. Ces d\u00e9monstrateurs semblent avoir un potentiel impact plus important en mati\u00e8re de transformation des pratiques quotidiennes : les Lieux Multiples ne sont pas seulement des lieux que l\u2019on visite pour une course ou un service. Ils constituent des lieux de vie temporaires, o\u00f9 entrer en contact avec des modes de vie plus durable, o\u00f9 essayer en vrai grandeur de nouvelles pratiques quotidiennes sans toutefois devoir s\u2019engager d\u00e9finitivement. En ce sens, ils sont bien plus susceptibles de constituer des moyens de transition, d\u00e9clencher des transformations plus profondes et durables parce que leurs usag\u00e9s font une exp\u00e9rience transformatrice aux cot\u00e9s de pairs, sur un temps plus long, une exp\u00e9rience r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e et qui surtout ne rel\u00e8ve pas de l\u2019exceptionnel mais de la vie quotidienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.5 VERS DES COMMUNAUT\u00c9S PLUS R\u00c9SILIANTES ?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ces quelques \u00e9l\u00e9ments tir\u00e9s de l\u2019analyse collective faite avec les \u00e9tudiants en cl\u00f4ture de l\u2019atelier sont loin de couvrir tout le potentiel des Lieux Multiples mais ils indiquent des directions prometteuses sur comment serait la vie au quotidien d\u2019un quartier si les Lieux Multiples en devenait la nouvelle norme. Ils nous semblent en particulier faire exister un niveau de communaut\u00e9 inclusive, d\u2019espaces collectifs, collaboratifs qui manquent cruellement dans le tissu urbain entre espaces priv\u00e9s et espaces publiques. Les Lieux Multiples favorisent une confrontation \u00e0 l\u2019alt\u00e9rit\u00e9, \u00e0 des points de vue diff\u00e9rents qui renforcent l\u2019agilit\u00e9, forcent \u00e0 la flexibilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les usag\u00e9s naviguent entre ces lieux qui prolongent l\u2019espace domestique et s\u2019y int\u00e8grent comme des formes d\u2019espaces domestiques \u00e9tendus[10]<\/sup><\/a>. Ils d\u00e9passent les routines quotidiennes et de ce fait rec\u00e8lent d\u2019un potentiel de transition des modes de vie. Enfin, ils semblent assurer une int\u00e9gration nouvelle de fonctions qui produit un effet multiplicateur des ressources, des synergies entre les parties prenantes, vers,in fine,<\/em>une plus grande r\u00e9silience urbaine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. EXP\u00c9RIMENTATION RADICALE\u00a0IN VITRO<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Entre des formes de design fiction, d\u2019explorations en rupture assum\u00e9e avec les usages courants et des formes de design au contraire centr\u00e9es sur les usages, l\u2019atelier se propose d\u2019explorer une approche \u00e0 la fois sp\u00e9culative, in vitro<\/em>mais qui en m\u00eame temps int\u00e8gre une forme de test utilisateurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.1 UN PROJET COLLECTIF DE QUARTIER EXP\u00c9RIMENTAL<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

D\u2019abord l\u00e0 o\u00f9 habituellement chaque sous-groupe de designers travaille sur une hypoth\u00e8se de projet ind\u00e9pendante de celle des autres, tous collaborent ici au m\u00eame projet, r\u00e9pondent \u00e0 une m\u00eame injonction du Maire de co-construire, dans une ville de taille moyenne, une exp\u00e9rimentation \u00e0 l’\u00e9chelle d\u2019un quartier. Les 8 projets de lieux multiples men\u00e9s en parall\u00e8le dans l\u2019atelier sont compl\u00e9mentaires. Le d\u00e9fi de l\u2019exercice est donc de discuter si, ensemble et non pas individuellement, les 8 Lieux multiples cr\u00e9\u00e9s dans le quartier exp\u00e9rimental, sont susceptibles de faire \u00e9voluer les pratiques quotidiennes des habitants vers des mode de vie plus durables, responsables et inclusifs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.2 UNE FORME DE TEST UTILISATEUR IN VITRO<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

La seconde originalit\u00e9 de cet exercice didactique est de demander aux groupes de designers de tester l\u2019ensemble des 8 Lieux Multiples. L\u00e0 encore o\u00f9 habituellement chaque groupe passe son propre projet au crible de diff\u00e9rents profils d\u2019utilisateur.trice.s, ici durant la seconde moiti\u00e9 de l\u2019atelier, chaque groupe fait passer un persona diff\u00e9rent \u00e0 travers les 8 Lieux Multiples, celui qu\u2019ils ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 mais aussi les 7 autres cr\u00e9\u00e9s par les autres groupes. Il en ressort une configuration de test simul\u00e9, certes\u00a0in vitro<\/em>mais beaucoup plus r\u00e9aliste. L\u2019\u00e9ventuelle complaisance de chaque groupe face \u00e0 sa propre cr\u00e9ation et l\u2019usage qui en serait fait se transforme\u00a0\u00a0esprit critique :\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0AGEDUCATION est pens\u00e9 pour accueillir des jeunes enfants et des personnes \u00e2g\u00e9es, notre persona, une single trentenaire habitant seul le quartier n\u2019y trouve pas sa place !\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le fait pour chaque groupe de se concentrer sur un seul\u00a0persona<\/em>permet de l\u2019incarner vraiment, d\u2019en int\u00e9grer plus profond\u00e9ment les pratiques quotidiennes et les caract\u00e9ristiques psychologiques. Surtout, de les appliquer transversalement, aux 8 Lieux Multiples pour appr\u00e9cier s\u2019ils sont \u00ab\u00a0actionnables\u00a0\u00bb ensemble, si leur usage combin\u00e9 par un foyer monoparental, une personne porteuse de handicap, un couple de retrait\u00e9s, etc. forme un style de vie coh\u00e9rent, s\u2019il est attractif, plausible et s\u2019il serait susceptible de conduire \u00e0 des pratiques plus durables, responsables et inclusives ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.3 OSER DES SCENARIOS DE TRANSITION PLUS RADICAUX<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0Vous \u00eates parfois un peu trop designers de services !\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>. Les \u00e9tudiants du Master PSSD sont rompus \u00e0 un travail fin d\u2019analyse des probl\u00e8mes d\u2019usages dans laquelle ils excellent pour en d\u00e9duire une nouvelle solution\u00a0servicielle<\/em>. Ici, l\u2019innovation incr\u00e9mentale ne suffit pas. Il n\u2019y a pas de probl\u00e8me sp\u00e9cifique \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre mais une transition des nouveaux modes de vie \u00e0 inventer. On ne cherche pas tant ce qu\u2019est un bureau de Poste, une gare, une \u00e9cole aurait besoin comme partenaire pour mieux fonctionner dans leurs attributions mais quel nouveau partenariat original, quel cocktail atypique et d\u00e9tonnant serait \u00e0 m\u00eame d\u2019\u00e9branler les routines quotidiennes du quartier, de faire sortir les habitants de leurs zones de confort ? Les designers doivent prendre un peu plus de risques, chercher des associations plus radicales au sein de Lieux Multiples ? De l\u00e0 nait dans la discussion avec les \u00e9tudiants, la m\u00e9taphore culinaire \u00ab\u00a0brocolis-chocolat\u00a0\u00bb pour inciter les designers \u00e0 explorer le contre-intuitif, \u00e0 oser l\u2019improbable, pour essayer, dans le cadre de ce labo exp\u00e9rimental que constitue cet atelier d\u2019une semaine, des configurations qui n\u2019ont pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 imagin\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les \u00e9tudiants se sont sentis un peu mal \u00e0 l’aise \u00e0 l’id\u00e9e d’entreprendre un processus de conception invers\u00e9 par rapport au processus traditionnel qu’ils avaient l’habitude de suivre. Dans les cours pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9s \u00e0 faire des recherches aupr\u00e8s des utilisateurs potentiels, \u00e0 trouver leurs besoins et \u00e0 y r\u00e9pondre avec leur solution. Dans ce cours, nous les avons provoqu\u00e9s et le processus de conception lui-m\u00eame tente de faire le chemin inverse. Partir de l’imagination pour envisager des sc\u00e9narios qui n’auraient probablement pas \u00e9t\u00e9 pris en consid\u00e9ration dans le cas contraire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serait-ce une fa\u00e7on efficace d’encourager les id\u00e9es folles\u00a0\u00bb, comme le dit le mantra du Design Thinking, en suivant un processus inhabituel ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En d\u2019autres termes, il est peu probable que des d\u00e9fis aussi radicaux que la transition sociale et environnementale ne demande pas aussi un peu de radicalit\u00e9 dans l\u2019approche de design\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.4 ORGANISER UNE AUTOCRITIQUE COLLECTIVE DE L\u2019INNOVATION<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ces premi\u00e8res frilosit\u00e9s d\u00e9pass\u00e9es, le r\u00e9sultat est riche. Les Lieux Multiples sortent des typologies de tiers-lieux habituelles : un h\u00f4pital avec une ferme, un mus\u00e9e avec une prison, un service administratif avec un th\u00e9\u00e2tre, etc. Au sein et entre groupes d\u2019\u00e9tudiants, les d\u00e9bats sur les\u00a0personas<\/em>, leurs adh\u00e9sions aux propositions et leurs chances de changer leurs pratiques quotidiennes sont vifs et contrast\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019image de la richesse multiculturelle des \u00e9tudiants de PSSD. Ce qui n\u2019est \u00e0 la base qu\u2019une exp\u00e9rimentation\u00a0in vitro,<\/em>un exercice didactique en chambre, devient plus int\u00e9ressant et r\u00e9aliste. La quantit\u00e9 de designers – une cinquantaine – leur diversit\u00e9 sociale et culturelle – plus d\u2019une quinzaine de nationalit\u00e9s pr\u00e9sentes – garantie une critique forte en termes d\u2019utilisabilit\u00e9 des solutions et d\u2019incitation \u00e0 la transitions des modes de vie. L\u2019architecture de conception crois\u00e9e avec celle de simulation des usages expos\u00e9e ci-dessus tire au mieux partie du groupe d\u2019\u00e9tudiants comme \u00ab\u00a0concepteurs-utilisateurs\u00a0\u00bb. Le changement de posture \u00e0 mi-parcours en est m\u00eame parfois troublant : les m\u00eames groupes de cr\u00e9atifs qui font preuve d\u2019imagination ambitieuse et ouverte quand il s\u2019agit de leur projet sont souvent plus critiques et m\u00eame parfois un peu conservateurs quand ils explorent les usages potentiels des projets des autres groupes ! David, Flavia et Karina, Maruka expriment par exemple des r\u00e9serves sur la fr\u00e9quentation de d\u00e9linquants pendant les visites au mus\u00e9e ART ESCAPE, Anita se plaint du choix restreint offert par HEALTHY ESTATE, etc. Ce curieux biais de r\u00e9sistante \u00e0 l\u2019innovation m\u00eame chez ceux dont c\u2019est le m\u00e9tier, tend \u00e0 renforcer l\u2019id\u00e9e que cette simulation de test d\u2019usage entre pairs et en l\u2019absence de v\u00e9ritables usagers d\u00e9passe l\u2019exercice de complaisance et comporte une v\u00e9ritable dimension critique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.5 ESSUYER LES PLATRES DES SCENARIOS DE TRANSITION\u2026<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019urgence de la transition environnementale et sociale tend \u00e0 questionner les d\u00e9marches d\u2019innovation incr\u00e9mentale et volontaire caract\u00e9ristique des approches de design, bas\u00e9es sur la co-cr\u00e9ation avec les usagers, l\u2019adoption progressive de solutions, l\u2019adaptation lentes des pratiques quotidiennes\u2026 Cette urgence appelle \u00e0 exp\u00e9rimenter des approches nouvelles comme celle pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ici combinant une posture orient\u00e9e usages et une remise en question plus radicale des modes de vie. Cette approche permet un affinage\u00a0in vitro<\/em>de l\u2019actionabilit\u00e9 des sc\u00e9narios de transition avant de mettre en branle un processus de co-designin vivo<\/em>et tout l\u2019investissement en capital social et financier et le pari sur le temps compt\u00e9 qu\u2019il repr\u00e9sente. La recherche d\u2019une telle approche de \u00ab\u00a0design acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb de la transition est bien l\u2019objet de l\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation tent\u00e9e par cette semaine d\u2019atelier au Politecnico de Milan. La multiplicit\u00e9 des points de vue \u00e9chang\u00e9s au sein du groupe large et h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8ne de designers assume une valeur de \u00ab\u00a0pr\u00e9-test\u00a0\u00bb face \u00e0 l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se des Lieux Multiples comme vecteurs de transformation des comportements. Cette d\u00e9marche exp\u00e9rimentale trouve sa place dans le processus d\u2019exploration des leviers de transition vers des modes de vie plus durables : elle permet d\u2019envisager des solutions plus risqu\u00e9es, radicales, d\u2019en appr\u00e9cier l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat, d\u2019en ajuster l\u2019acceptabilit\u00e9 et la pertinence, d\u2019en estimer le potentiel comme sc\u00e9nario de transition locale \u00e0 proposer comme hypoth\u00e8se de travail avant d\u2019engager un processus de co-\u00e9laboration\u00a0in vivo<\/em>avec les habitants d\u2019un quartier.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
