Responsible Innovation COMPASS is an EU-funded H2020 project that supports Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) from emerging technology industries to manage their research, development and innovation activities in a responsible and inclusive manner. The project focused on 3 sectors of innovation : nanotechnology, cyber security and biomedicine. COMPASS project was implemented over three years, between May 1, 2016 and April 30, 2019. SDS was, in particular, in charge of designing the RRI lab journey including the design of all the needed tools and methods.
The project produced the following elements :
- A self-check tool to determine to what extent your company practices already align with responsible innovation principles, what you can do to make your company’s innovation processes and outcomes even more responsible, and how you compare to other companies. It is a learning instrument that guides a company through the most important responsible innovation practices, and helps you identify company strengths and areas of opportunity. Each question asks about a particular company practice and gives you good practice examples as answer options.
- A method kid to support you in embedding responsible practices in your innovation strategies. The method kit contains the co-creation method booklet, describing the method step-by-step, and a webinar, including a concise introduction to the co-creation process, followed by experience-based pieces of advice for facilitators. This co-creation method booklet is for the use of Business Support Organisations or others keen to support companies in designing Roadmaps towards RI. Yet, companies wishing to set up an internal lab can of course use the same methodology and adjust it according to their realities.
- Responsible Innovation Roadmaps : The roadmaps for responsible innovation in nanotechnology, cyber security and biomedicine were co-developed with 40 companies and civil society organisations. Based on general issues relevant across the three sectors and industry-specific aspects that have been observed in the co-creation process, COMPASS developed three sector-specific roadmaps. Companies then had the opportunity to pilot roadmap actions and report on usability of the roadmaps themselves.
